Welcome to The Ojai Daily Update where at the end of each day we will be posting news and notes and all the exciting happenings of the 113th annual event billed as the largest and longest running amateur tennis tournament played at the same site.
Eduardo Nava and Ciro Riccardi were just two junior winners who moved on to the next qualifying round on the men’s side, as did longtime Sunset Hills Country Club Director of Tennis Paul Steele.
On the women’s side, past Ojai junior winner Sivan Krems of Thousand Oaks won two qualifying matches to advance to the Round of 16 main draw, which begins play on Friday at the Ojai Valley Inn. Krems will take on former WTA world No. 39-ranked and No. 2-seeded Ashley Harkleroad at 10:30 on Friday. Noelle Hickey is the top-seed.
The Pac-12 men’s team dual-match event begins on Wednesday at The Ojai with Washington taking on Arizona at 11 a.m. at Libbey Park followed by Utah vs. Oregon at 2 p.m. Check here for the men’s draw.
On Wednesday in Ventura, the Fullerton College women’s team takes on Sierra College at noon at Ventura College in the California Community Colleges Athletic Association State Team Championships, being held for the first time as part of The Ojai.
Then at 1 p.m. at Pierpont Racquet Club, the Ventura College men will play Fresno City for the State team title.
Two-time Boys’ CIF champion and future UCLA Bruin Gage Brymer of Irvine-University High will attempt to be the first player since Bobby Riggs (1934-36) to win three consecutive interscholastic titles in a division that began in 1899 when he takes on Blaine Mengert of Orange Lutheran in the first round at 8 a.m. Thursday morning at Libbey Park.
