Open, Juniors Begin Play Today at The Ojai

OPEN DIVISION TODAY:

Top-seeded Deiton Baughman of Carson opens up play at the Ojai Valley Inn against Jens Sweaney at 11 a.m. Twelve-time Open finalist and seven-time winner and No. 5-seeded Lester Cook plays at 12:30 p.m. against Connor Hudson of Golden, Colo. No. 2-seeded Clay Thompson faces Alhassan Kenawi of Irvine at 12:30 p.m. In women’s action, top-seeded former University of Florida All-American Lauren Embree all the rest of the women open play on Friday at the OVI.

JUNIORS TODAY:

The Junior divisions, including CIF Boys Singles and Doubles, start Thursday with top-seeded Jacob Brumm of Torrey Pines High taking on Lucas Chmielewski of La Canada High at Upper Libbey Park starting at 9 a.m. Junior tournament director Craig Fugle reporter 460 players in eight divisions with the juniors mostly playing on private courts around Ojai. “These Thursday matches will take place on 45 courts at 20 different locations,” Fugle said. The CIF divisions are headquartered at Thacher School and are being run by SCTA Junior Comp Director and Junior Tournament Referee Trevor Kroenemann, a former Ojai champion. There are 270 junior matches scheduled for Thursday alone. And all junior finals are Saturday at Libbey Park.

INDEPENDENT COLLEGES

MEN: Play starts on Friday and Brendan Aguilar of San Diego Christian is the top-seed and plays his first round at Camino Real Park in Ventura.

WOMEN: Erin Walker of Abilene Christian is the top seed and plays Thursday morning at Pierpont Racquet Club.

MEN’S DIVISION III WEST REGIONAL: Claremont Mudd Scripps’ Skyler Butts is top-seeded with play starting Friday at Pierpont Racquet Club.
