The Boys’ CIF singles and doubles finals at the 123rd Ojai Tennis Tournament was an all-Orange County affair with a familiar school and a familiar player once again showcasing Irvine’s supremacy in high school tennis as The Ojai closed out its storied CIF competition for 2025 on Saturday at Libbey Park.
Third-seeded Rishvanth Krishna, of University High School in Irvine, claimed his first Boys’ CIF singles championship with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over fellow sophomore Matteo Huarte, of Mater Dei. Krishna captured University’s fourth Boys’ CIF singles championship in the past five editions of the Ojai Tennis Tournament, and its seventh title in The Ojai’s last 13 Boys’ CIF singles events. Krishna received The Farnam Cup (a.k.a., The Ojai Valley Tennis Club Cup), which is awarded to the Boys’ CIF singles champion and is The Ojai’s oldest perpetual trophy, as it was first presented in 1902.
In the Boys’ CIF doubles final, second-seeded Caden Lee and Zhiyu Yuan, of Beckman High in Irvine, rallied to a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over senior Trevor Nguyen and junior David Tran of Marina High. Beckman senior Caden Lee won his second consecutive Boys’ CIF doubles title at The Ojai, after winning the same crown with his younger brother, Tyler, in 2024. Lee and Yuan, a freshman, received The Wightman Cups, which were first presented to The Ojai champions in this competition in 1910. It is the fourth consecutive Boys’ CIF doubles title won by an Orange County school.
Since 1955, The John Van B. Griggs Memorial Challenge Trophy is awarded to the high school with the best cumulative results through the Boys’ CIF singles and doubles events. On the strength of Krishna’s singles championship and a doubles semifinal appearance from JiHyuk Im and Humam Alajeely, University won the Griggs Cup for the 11th time, and the fourth time in the past five Ojai tournaments.
